  • Jesuit High School : Tampa, FloridaView Gallery

Our work over the years at this great & tradition-laden institution:
    - converting the former Administration Building into much-needed classrooms
    - the total renovation of the former Rectory into administrative offices and updating the living facilities for the Jesuit faculty
    - Father Joseph Doyle’s stained glass memorial structure to the Students
    - complete renovation & updating of the gymnasium; creation of the Al Lopez Athletic Center with new locker rooms for each sport & a new wrestling facility
    - the new Harnett technology & computer classroom building which included the complete renovation of the existing library
    - the creation of the Walk of Honor from the Plaza to the football/baseball fields
    - the Men for Others contemplative structure
    - a balcony structure for adding seats to the Arts & Music building (un-built as yet)
    - the Remembrance Tower honoring the Jesuit Order
    - the new Tiger Stadium at Paul Straub Field (as yet un-built).

Each project has been designed with an intent to further both the high tradition of excellent performance instilled in students, wile also communicating the spiritual nature of the purpose of the school. All of the projects have involved a wide range of administration, faculty, and with the Remembrance Tower, a committee of 12 students added commentary during the design.

  • Efficiency Enterprises Store & Trucking Facility : Tampa, FloridaView Gallery

Our firm provided site planning, design, landscape design & construction management of this 10 acre site which includes a major truck repair facility, a state-of-the-art unique convenience store, and major gasoline fueling capabilities. The maximum use of the site demanded some creative civil engineering by Landmark Engineering, working with our firm to accomplish.

  • Advanced Handling Systems Engineering Office : Lakeland, FloridaView Gallery

The offices of this engineering firm were designed and completed in the face of our most difficult client, by far, and the building has gained a certain positive aesthetic presence along the Lakeland Bypass Expressway. To meet the tight budget, we incorporated a prefab engineered steel frame, and wrapped the building envelope so that it does not appear as a "metal building". The large engineering production room features a 35' high "cathedral" ceiling with clerestory windows running the length of the center of the building to aid in providing natural lighting to the interior of the building.

We provided contract administration during the difficult construction process, managing the Owner and Contractor through four direct hurricanes the summer of 2001. Though the building has never leaked, we were sued (the only time in our 26 year career) because it "might leak". This time we learned a valuable lesson: "listen to your gut feelings". Some commissions are better to reject based upon personalities. We have no problem doing this now.

Yet, we are most proud of this project for a variety of reasons. It has served the Owner very well, is very energy-efficient, has become very recognizable to the local business environment, and…has never leaked, despite it’s unique design.

  • Highland Park LakehouseView Gallery

Again teaming up with both Bill Bishop and the Heidt Engineering firm, Bert Thomas Architect developed the "lakehouse" to serve as the community clubhouse for the neo-traditional Highland Park community. Conceptual designs were also produced for the neighborhood church that Mr. Bishop was donating to the community; the downtown commercial & retail center area with live/work units located above; a three-story self-storage facility as well as a traditionally-themed "big box" grocery store that was scaled to the fabric of the new neighborhood.

The lakehouse provides meeting rooms, two offices, a kitchen area, ample restrooms to also serve the large jr Olympic pool and competitions therein, and a community sized living room for informal meetings. A large state of the art exercise area overlooks both the adjacent lake and pool areas.

  • Lennar Pavilion & Stagecoach Clubhouses : Hillsborough County and Pasco County, FloridaView Gallery

One test of an architect is to provide workable design solutions also for projects that have limited budgets while still meeting design objectives. Such was the case when Bert Thomas Architects designed the clubhouse facilities for both the Pavilions in Hillsborough County and the Stagecoach development of Pasco County for Lennar Homes.

  • The Bridges Clubhouse : Riverview, FloridaView Gallery

This clubhouse is designed to operate as a part of the total care concept initiated by Senior Care Group, Inc, for this project enabling an entire senior community to move from one lifestage to another in familiar surroundings and with minimal disruption to daily life, thus the name, The Bridges. This clubhouse contains a state of the art commercial kitchen in which the meals for an adjacent 110 bed assisted living facility are prepared, as well as an upper class dining area within the clubhouse, overlooking both swimming pool and lake views in the Riverview, Florida area.

Typical senior activities such as exercise rooms, spa salon, card rooms, & clubrooms are also found within this facility, designed along a country “English” theme, as are the other buildings on-site, also designed by Bert Thomas Architects.

Despite a strict budget for the project, the design met this constraint and was produced within record time, enabling the Owner to maintain their financing commitments.
